The divine right of kings was overturned some centuries ago by the concept of human rights, leadership accountability, democracy, and individual freedom, plus the rule of the majority. But immediately after the kings lost their divine right our ancestors devised a new form of autocracy: the corporation. And the corporation was soon given the same guarantees of freedom and legal protections as individuals, with the corporate decision makers being immune from individual monetary law suits when the corporation was guilty of all manner of crimes. Thus we now have the divine right of corporations to write laws, elect congressional representation, select cabinet officers, and otherwise make public decisions for the good of the corporation. So much for revolutions, reforms, idealism, propaganda, re-written histories, campaign promises and fantasies. History moves, but greed remains as common as dirt as more hopes retreat into the fantasies of dreamers and charlatans. Miles per gallon will fade into dollars per mile; per minute. And mobility, like hopes, dreams, plans, optimism drift into the forgotten corner of history until or if the unsatisfiable divine greed of corporations is tempered with reason, justice, fairness or simply hogwash. Don’t hold your breath. Richard E. Lake
