What is the state of my mental condition, my mood, psyche, my attitude on this first day of 2008? I am neutral, neither negative nor positive; not filled with hope, but not necessarily despondent, perhaps a bit sad and a tad angry. I ran out of hope gradually after 9/11, after the religious right became angry, aggressive and determined to condemn all who did not follow their narrow creed. I am rather blue, rather than bright white or green or orange or dark grey. Perhaps I can list my reasons for my state of mind, some of which are environmental and some are internal. The blatant, aggressive and insulting behavior, power and influence of the corporate world of which I am increasingly aware, makes me bitter angry and in despair. I have recounted the Little Orphan Annie secret message ring I purchased with two OVALTINE boxtops and $.10, finding the secret message to be, "buy OVALTINE", as an example of corporate tactlessness and insulting greed. But all of that pales by comparison to the onerous weight corporations now throw around with impunity: especially at all levels of government, from local to national. And this leads me to my second reason for my bland, blah, bleak, bleary and blue state of mind. Corporate greed, obscene and grossly excessive wealth of the top ten percent or two percent of the population has left the lower, middle and upper middle class with less and less purchasing power and in poverty by many standards. AND WE ARE NOT REPRESENTED AT ANY LEVEL OF EFFECTIVE GOVERNMENT! LATER: With all the educated, experienced, inventive, insightful, scholarly, clever, talented, smart, ingenious people on this globe how come we cannot find solutions to our problems? With all the devout, religious, worshiping, God-fearing, holy, Bible-literate, praying, and intensely convinced righteous believes on this planet how come we cannot know and do God’s will that will bring peace, harmony and God’s Kingdom, or its equivalent9, to all peoples? With all the wealthy, healthy, strong, brave, noble, determined and artistic people in all the universities, centers of learning, the seats of governments, board rooms of corporations, the palaces of power and control, how come we/they cannot solve simple problems, address complex problems, answer simple questions, share a minimum of the overwhelming abundance, and relieve at least half of the unreasonable suffering of so many people? And with all the classrooms, labs, libraries, educators, books, laptops, computers, textbooks, high tech tools, budgets, maps, internet accesses, and, the accumulated wisdom of so many cultures in so many languages for so many centuries, including the vast wasteland of television, why oh why can we not find solutions to ignorance, poverty, environmental degradation, horrendous injustices, and fratricidal wars and revolutions?
